The aim of the article is to retrace the history of an important book series entitled Die Gesellschaft (Society), published in forty volumes between 1906 and 1912 by the German publishing house Rütten & Loening, and to offer some interpretative outlines of the preface – written in 1906 by the editor Martin Buber – of which the first Italian translation is provided in the appendix. The article is divided into two paragraphs: in the first, a presentation of the series is given, with regard to its historical and cultural setting and its underlying political and ideological approach. The second deals with the preface and thus with the specific scientific and cultural approach that Buber intended to offer.
