Starting from the Etruscan centre of San Cassiano, near Rovigo, the contribution develops the theme of the settlement transformations that affected not only Adria and its chora, but also the nearby lowland Veneto, between the late 6th and 5th centuries BC. If in fact many aspects of the picture of Adria in this phase still need to be clarified, San Cassiano, where heavy carpentry is attested within a regular settlement pattern, offers a clearer picture of the vast phenomenon of restructuring and planning that in the same chronological span characterised not only Padanian Etruria but also the centres of Este and Padua; in this scenario, the chora of Adria plays a position and role of hinge between Padanian Etruria and the Veneto. Here it is especially the centre of Padua that allows for insights into settlement planning and building techniques. By the end of the 6th century BC Padua achieves full physiognomy as a city, and the programmatic regularity of its urban grid is certified by the well-known cippus decussatus of Palazzo Zabarella. However, other data from the urban area also deserve attention, attesting on the one hand to its durable and monumental development, and on the other hand to its full ability to control and exploit the sources and supply of stone materials.
