Moving from the analysis of various texts by Durs Grünbein, in which rubbish is presented as imbued with memory and rubbish dumps as enormous memory archives, the article explores the importance of waste in the author’s oeuvre as an element of poetological relevance as well as a symbol for the preservation and transmission of cultural memory. Particular attention is paid to the role of the poet as an archaeologist and to his way of dealing with a special kind of waste: the ruins of the bombed city of Dresden.

Abstract

Moving from the analysis of various texts by Durs Grünbein, in which rubbish is presented as imbued with memory and rubbish dumps as enormous memory archives, the article explores the importance of waste in the author’s oeuvre as an element of poetological relevance as well as a symbol for the preservation and transmission of cultural memory.
