In the first part of our analysis, we will examine the historical context of the discussion. More specifically, summarize the contributions of some of the "pioneers" who have facilitated the first "public" experiences of education for persons with disabilities in Italy and at the end of the nineteenth century. We will the analyse the process of change within the culture of disability, arriving at some of the current challenges and iusses we are now facing in Italy in term of maintaining high levels of inclusion for people with disabilities. Ways in which these problems create difficulties in facilitating further improvements in partecipation and quality of life as experienced by persons with disabilities will also be discussed.
