Some actual cases show how certain demographic parameters in a population (total fertility rate and mean age at birth) can result external to the range formed by the same parameters in the subpopulations in which it is divided. We intend to demostrate that it is not a paradox. The total fertility rate calculated on the whole population is an average of some parameters of their subpopulations only if all the subpopulations have an identical age structure. Furthermore, in the case of mean age at birth, there is another factor in the calculation of the average, that represents the ratio of the rotal fertility in each subgroup on the total fertility in the entire population.

Abstract

Some actual cases show how certain demographic parameters in a population (total fertility rate and mean age at birth) can result external to the range formed by the same parameters in the subpopulations in which it is divided. We intend to demostrate that it is not a paradox. The total fertility rate calculated on the whole population is an average of some parameters of their subpopulations only if all the subpopulations have an identical age structure. Furthermore, in the case of mean age at birth, there is another factor in the calculation of the average, that represents the ratio of the rotal fertility in each subgroup on the total fertility in the entire population.
