This article shows how, through the analysis of a short text, students can gain insights into how the different levels of meanings of a text are expressed through the linguistic choices made. In particular, they can understand how features such as modalization, indirect speech acts, evaluative lexis, impersoanl forms, embedding, thematization and management of shared and unshared information work together to achieve politeness.
