This chapter retraces the creative process of choreographer Marco D’Agostin’s Gli anni, the only choreographic adaptation of Les Années, performed by Marta Ciappina. We highlight points of convergence and divergence between the choreography and Ernaux’s text, reflect on bodily memory and the body as archive, and link Ernaux’s conception of time in her writing with D’Agostin’s creation of a dance “capable of making time pass.” Concrete examples from the choreography and Ciappina’s performance reveal how engaging with other art forms provides a different perspective on literary works.

Abstract

This chapter retraces the creative process of choreographer Marco D’Agostin’s Gli anni, the only choreographic adaptation of Les Années, performed by Marta Ciappina. We highlight points of convergence and divergence between the choreography and Ernaux’s text, reflect on bodily memory and the body as archive, and link Ernaux’s conception of time in her writing with D’Agostin’s creation of a dance “capable of making time pass.” Concrete examples from the choreography and Ciappina’s performance reveal how engaging with other art forms provides a different perspective on literary works.
