Both Gustav Friedrich Waagen (1794–1868) and Charles Lock Eastlake (1793–1865) travelled to Venice with the aim of acquiring paintings for their respective museums in Berlin and London. The aim of this essay is to examine, also from a comparative perspective, the goals of the two directors, their acquisition strategies, and their critical perspective on Venetian painters, which was the main focus of their trips to the Lagoon. The chapter is part of a collection of essays curated by Neville Rowley, dedicated to Waagen and Eastlake as connoisseurs, stemming from a seminar held in 2023 at Fondazione Zeri.
