This chapter explores the development, implementation, and challenges of virtual exchange (VE) in educational settings. It covers VE’s origins in language learning, particularly the Cultura model, as well as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and dialogue-based models through which VE can foster intercultural communication, critical thinking, and digital literacy. The chapter highlights complexities of VE, such as establishing equitable communication protocols, managing institutional constraints, and selecting appropriate technology. It addresses barriers like language dominance, technological accessibility, and funding inequalities, suggesting the need for reciprocal, culturally responsive partnerships. As VE moves toward transformative education, it encourages a shift from mere cultural competence to deeper self-reflection and engagement. Looking ahead, the authors argue that VE, unlike AI-driven tools, emphasises human connection, empathy, and shared learning, making it a crucial pedagogical tool in an increasingly interconnected yet polarised world.

Abstract
Looking ahead, the authors argue that VE, unlike AI-driven tools, emphasises human connection, empathy, and shared learning, making it a crucial pedagogical tool in an increasingly interconnected yet polarised world.Pubblicazioni consigliate
