The present thesis contains the edition, with translation and commentary, of Book VIII and chapters 37–40 of Book IX of the first section of the Arabic medical encyclopaedia al-Kitāb al-Malakī and its two Latin translations. The Kitāb al-Malakī was composed in the central decades of the tenth century by the Zoroastrian physician ʿAlī ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Maǧūsī and offers a comprehensive exposition of the entire body of medical knowledge. Within its first section, which deals with medical theory, Books VIII and IX address special pathology. The two Latin translations, the Pantegni by Constantine the African (second half of the eleventh century) and the Liber Regalis by Stephen of Antioch or, as he calls himself, the Philosopher (early twelfth century) mark the beginning of the Arabic–Latin translation movement. Despite their importance for medieval medical thought, all these works remain unedited. The present thesis represents the first attempt to recover them from library shelves. The first chapter is devoted to the role of pathology in the system developed by al-Maǧūsī in his encyclopaedia, and seeks to define his position within the cultural milieu of his age. The second chapter narrows its focus to al-Maǧūsī’s descriptions of fevers, tumours, cutaneous diseases, urology, and gynaecology - the principal subjects of the studied books - and concludes by examining whether, and to what extent, the translation of these books into Latin introduced innovations into the Latin medical tradition. Chapters Three to Five share the same structure and are dedicated respectively to the Kitāb al-Malakī, the Pantegni, and the Liber Regalis. Each begins with an overview of the history of the transmission of the work, based on the catalogue of manuscripts presented in Appendices A–C. This is followed by the critical edition, introduced by a philological assessment of the collated manuscript copies and their relationships. The edition is accompanied by an English translation, while the final commentary addresses both doctrinal and lexical aspects. In addition to the catalogue appendices, Appendix D contains an Arabic–Latin glossary, and Appendix E outlines the main principles of the digital tools and methods employed to compile, organise, and structure the material contained in this thesis.
