This paper deals with the electromagnetic comparison between a Radial Flux and an Axial Flux Motor that are designed to drive the propeller of an electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft. The analysis highlights the main constraints imposed by the aircraft structure and compares the performance of the two proposed motors carrying out two different analysis: the first is done imposing the permanent magnet mass, the latter imposes the maximum available volume. The eletromagnetic performance are evaluated through 2D simulations. For the Axial Flux Motor the analysis is validated through 3D simulations, ensuring the accuracy of the proposed model. Once the performance are evaluated, several considerations are given on the appropriate cooling system for each motor.
