This article provides a concise overview of medieval and humanist Latin translations of the pseudo-Aristotelian treatise De Mirabilibus Auscultationibus (Mir.). It gives particular attention to the earliest translation, by Bartholomew of Messina (second half of the thirteenth century), for which a critical edition is being prepared as part of the Aristoteles Latinus series. The article explores the Latin text tradition, the stemmatic position of the Greek original used by Bartholomew, and the distinctive features of the medieval translator's working method. Special attention will be given to the translation variants documented in this text. Such “doublets” are a characteristic feature of Bartholomew’s translations, previously examined by Lisa Devriese in the case of the Physiognomonics.
