Abstract

Before its partial demolition in 2016, the Lanificio Tiberghien complex in Verona (1907-2004), was a perfect "catalogue" of twentieth-century industrial architecture, since it collected different construction systems patented or not) that compared French and Italian experiences in the use of modern materials such reinforced concrete, iron and steel. The ongoing research analyzes the of complex development over the course of nearly seventy years (1907-1975), where the use of different construction systems over time, as well as the continuous building transformations, demonstrate the adaptation of the architecture and technology to the production’s needs. This paper focuses on the spinning mill building, erected in 1911 by the Milanese firm of engineer H. Bollinger, one of the first buildings constructed entirely in reinforced concrete in the municipality of Verona, as part of such “catalogue” that, despite the loss of some of its oldest sections, still highlights architectural excellence. The paper reports a broader research steaming from the preservation and valorization activities, promoted within the ARCOVER project, of the technical documentation of the buildings in the “Tiberghien” collection, that now is hosted at the Verona Institute for the History of the Resistance and the Contemporary Age.
