Abstract

This paper examines commercial relations between Sicily and Marseille using sources related to maritime navigation. It describes how we managed and structured the mass of information collected in a database. Our choices enabled us to explore the agency of players and the temporalities of navigation in the second half of the eighteenth century. The increase of Neapolitan and Genoese ships on this route did not rely on greater speed nor on the use of more modern ships. The persistence of traditional shipping methods did not hinder their conquest of maritime transport between Sicily and Marseille.
