The essay focuses on lexical aspects of Italian court proceedings, starting from the AttiChiari corpus. The work dwells in particular on the non-Italian lexical component within the lawyers proceedings: on the one hand, Latinisms, which derive from the profoundly conservative character of the legal language and its link with the language of Roman law; on the other hand, foreignerisms, a direct consequence of the continuous adaptation of the language of law to changing social values and phenomena, political ideologies and technological innovations.

Abstract

The essay focuses on lexical aspects of Italian court proceedings, starting from the AttiChiari corpus. The work dwells in particular on the non-Italian lexical component within the lawyers proceedings: on the one hand, Latinisms, which derive from the profoundly conservative character of the legal language and its link with the language of Roman law; on the other hand, foreignerisms, a direct consequence of the continuous adaptation of the language of law to changing social values and phenomena, political ideologies and technological innovations.
