Abstract

The combination of chitosan, a natural biopolymer, with geopolymers, a class of inorganic materials, represents a promising strategy to develop sustainable and high-performance composites for various applications. This review explores the current state of research on chitosan-geopolymer composites, focusing on two primary methods of incorporation: pre-geopolymerization and post-geopolymerization. Key findings highlight how chitosan addition impacts the properties of geopolymers, with potential applications in civil construction materials and environmental remediation. The review also discusses the challenges of process optimization, scalability, and long-term performance, identifying future research directions to enhance the effectiveness of these materials. This work aims to provide a comprehensive overview for researchers and engineers interested in the development and application of innovative, eco-friendly materials.
