EVOLUZIONE URBANA E CAMBIAMENTI AMBIENTALI NEL SETTORE OCCIDENTALE DELLA COLONIA DI AQUILEIA

The paper investigates the relationship occurring between urban transformation and environmental change, focusing on the western sector of the Latin colony of Aquileia. The analysis is based on both published and unpublished archaeological and environmental data. Fresh data derive from the study of the fill layers within the sewer system or the Roman theatre, and from new mechanical corings carried out in the bed of the Canale Anfora, the major hydraulic infrastructure that managed water flow across a wide urban and rural area. These data are further integrated with the results of recent radiometric analyses, allowing for a more robust and precise chronological framework of both environmental dynamics and urban developments. Overall, the study highlights phenomena of escalation of environmental change linked to specific construction choices and patterns of urban growth, as well as strategies of adaptation and mitigation. The study reveals a complex and nuanced interplay between the development of the urban environment and the natural landscape, far from being linear or monolithic.
