Magnesium batteries are an appealing alternative with respect to lithium systems in terms of performance, cost, availability of raw materials and recycling processes. Primary devices are already a commercial reality and have their particular niche market, even though they are not the first choice due to the rapid depletion of magnesium during cycling. Secondary magnesium batteries are still in their youthful age, despite the great achievements obtained in the last three decades, which bring them closer to practical applications. In this chapter, a brief overview on the strategies adopted to develop the materials for primary and secondary magnesium batteries is given. In the conclusion, suggestions on future activities in this challenging field are provided.
