In response to the transformative impact of technology on global society, education must adapt to meet the changing needs of learners. However, as technologies evolve, so do the competencies and skill sets teachers need to be effective in integrating digital tools into their practices. This chapter explores the convergence of evolving technology, contexts and teacher competencies within teacher education (TE). It examines different perspectives on teacher digital competence, considering its investigation, application and evolution. The chapter advocates for a shift in understanding teacher digital competence towards a more holistic approach, using the lens of teacher identity. Analysing current debates and literature on teacher identity for competent teachers using technologies, the chapter identifies implications for future policy and practice, emphasizing the importance of incorporating organic approaches into TE.
