This article is an invitation to reread one of the greatest European poets of the second half of the 20th century, Vasko Popa, focusing on some of the major motifs present in his poetry. Analyzing three important poetic collections written by Popa between 1956 and 1975, the questions of the immanence and the mythical transfiguration of history are addressed. The article supports the thesis that Vasko Popa’s poetry marked a decisive turning point for the literature written under communist regimes, bringing about a clear, irreversible departure from the doctrine of socialist realism, and reaffirming the absolute autonomy of poetic discourse, its right to remain true solely to itself.
