This chapter looks into the motives for violence during the Italian Civil War. As this violence followed no particular military logic, it is best examined through an analysis of the politics and culture of violence instituted by Fascism during the interwar period. The chapter analyzes the different cultures of violence, the experiences of violence, and the techniques of violence that so strongly marked Italians in the period in question. Finally, some very short biographies will illustrate the paths taken by different Italians from 1915 to 1945.
