Since the Middle Ages, Bolzano has been located at a strategic commercial crossroads between north-central Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The ensuing encounter between Italian and German merchants was represented concretely through the art and architecture of the prestigious seat of the Mercantile Magistrate (1633-1850), the body in charge of settling the commercial disputes that arose at the four annual fairs.
