Geometries and Hidden Traces. The Digital Reconstruction of the Medieval Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice

The paper documents the latest findings of a research project dedicated to the centuries-old architectural evolution of the lagoon convent of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. This convent was involved in a profound spiritual and material reconfiguration that marked the transition from the medieval to the Renaissance model. A comprehensive bibliographic and archival investigation has facilitated an analytical examination of the various construction phases of the complex, with the objective of elucidating and representing the architectural evolution that occurred over a period of approximately three centuries. The research project has successfully identified the significant urban transformation that occurred over time and has delineated potential areas of interest. To further validate the textual and graphic documents of the lost medieval complex, a georadar survey was conducted with direct funding from the Ministry of Culture, directed by the Superintendency of Venice and the Lagoon
