This paper presents a comprehensive numerical analysis of the impact of Variable Speed Generation (VSG) on a small hydro Francis turbine. A robust model was developed to assess performance during runner speed deceleration under partial load conditions. The findings demonstrate that VSG significantly improves turbine stability by reducing radial force and pressure perturbations, while optimizing flow dynamics in the draft tube, thus extending the operational range and enhancing efficiency.

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive numerical analysis of the impact of Variable Speed Generation (VSG) on a small hydro Francis turbine. A robust model was developed to assess performance during runner speed deceleration under partial load conditions. The findings demonstrate that VSG significantly improves turbine stability by reducing radial force and pressure perturbations, while optimizing flow dynamics in the draft tube, thus extending the operational range and enhancing efficiency.
