The essay analyses the role of Pagano della Torre (bishop of Padua since 1302) as privileged interlocutor and patron of the ‘proto-humanist’ circle of the city. Della Torre played a significant role in the poetic coronation of Albertino Mussato, who chose him as dedicatory for his De gestis Italicorum, while Pace da Ferrara dedicated to him the epic fragment Turrigene gentis preconia. Pagano’s importance in the development of the Paduan humanistic circle is confirmed by the poetic exchange between Mussato and the Venetian chancellor Tanto, transmitted by MS ASVe, Collegio, Promissioni, 1 (1225‑1435), formerly ex Brera 277, and published by Giovanni Monticolo. It also contains a hymn in Asclepiad stanzas composed by Tanto in praise of bishop Della Torre.
