Discussing its use during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the article asks what is the heuristic value of the category of genocide for historians, and how do its three relevant spheres of use – law, political discourse, and historical analysis – interact. After outlining the uses of the legal interpretations of genocide in historical research and their problems, the article surveys how historians and social scientists have approached the semantic field of genocide. The article claims that in order to be analytically useful for historians, the concept of genocide needs to be explicitly freed from its legal meanings, which moreover evolve along with international criminal case law.
