This study examines the development of Christology in the Western Church during the second half of the 4th century, focusing on Hilary of Poitiers' De synodis and Jerome's Epistle 15. The analysis reveals a significant gap between East and West in the understanding and development of Christological debates. Hilary, exiled in the East, shows a deep understanding of complex theological discussions and attempts to reconcile Nicene and Homoiousian positions. Jerome, on the other hand, reflects a limited Western understanding, clinging to older Nicene positions and struggling with new Eastern terminology. The study concludes that while the East made significant progress in Christological formulation between Nicaea (325) and Constantinople (381), Western writers generally remained more archaic in their approach, relying on older sources and tending towards a monarchian emphasis on divine unity.
