Gherardo Spini was a Medici courtier, secretary to Duke Cosimo I'son Ferdinando, a man of letters and a member of the Accademia Fiorentina and the Accademia Fiorentina del disegno from 1567. Born in Bologna approximately 1528, Spini experimented with poetry and was deeply involved in cultural circles. He was in close contact with men of letters, including Varchi, Domenichi, and Cellini, and noblewomen such as Laura Battiferra degli Ammaniti. Spini is best known for three unfinished and unpublished books, treatise about ornaments entitled "I tre primi libri sopra l’istituzione intorno agl’ornamenti" which he started in 1568 and dedicated to Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici.
