Abstract

The contribution explores the space that cities seem destined to occupy in times often described as “post-democracy”. This formula was coined in a critical sense, to indicate an emptying of democracy, but it may be the signal of the emergence of a transnational dimension of constitutionalism. In this transformation, with its ambivalences, cities seem to play a constitutional role. They partecipate - and, in some cases, as a vanguard - to this change, which unmoors them from an exclusive reference to the State; on the other, cities are the privileged location, the epicenter, of a democratic dynamism, in contrast to the post-democratic depoliticization.
