The article proposes an in-depth analysis of: Aug., De utilitate credendi, 5, 11. After an initial presentation of the context and content of the text, the study attempts to expose the hermeneutic principles that guide Augustine’s reflection, with particular reference to the relationship between the notions of truth, correctness, error, falsity, interpretation, intention. In the final section, the developments of Augustine’s mature hermeneutic reflection are briefly examined, with special attention to the relationship between the notions of text and author, thought and communication, meaning and translation.
