In 1933 G. Vitelli and M. Norsa published some iambic verses (= PSI 1216) attributing them to Archilochus. Linguistic and metrical problems, as well as the indirect tradition of the same verses quoted under the name of Callimachus, raised doubts about the authorship and induced scholars such as G. Pasquali and R. Pfeiffer to attribute the new iambic fragment to Callimachus. In 1941 POxy 2170-2172 demonstrated that PSI 1216 belongs to Callimachus’ Iambus V. This essay describes the debate, and provides the edition of two unpublished texts by Paul Maas, which shed light on his first reactions to the proekdosis of PSI 1216 and inform his philological and metrical evaluations regarding several fragments of archaic lyric poetry. Finally, some questions remained unresolved are discussed, with special reference to Archilocus fr. 329 W2 and the indirect tradition of Callimachus’ Iambus V.

Abstract
