The paper focuses on the history and development of the TECT project, launched in 2011 to create a database for the cataloguing of ancient painting, starting with the highly fragmentary Roman remains from the Cisalpine region. Regio X, in particular, was the database’s rst eld of application and the real testbed. e wide range of occurrences made it possible to deal with all possible ways of preserving artefacts, from fragmentary nds to in situ paintings. e collection of this large amount of data made it possible to identify the original features of local painting production and the links with di erent territorial areas. e project has then involved other geographical contexts as case studies: two relating to circumscribed areas, such as the Necropoli Laurentina in Ostia and the Terme del Sarno in Pompeii, and one relating to an extended territorial context, namely Regio VIII. Each context is distinguished by speci c characteristics and methodological requirements, linked to the history of the studies, the methods of discovery and the state of conservation of the pictorial materials.
