The University of Padua has been conducting archaeological surveys in a residential quarter of ancient Aquileia (UD, ITA) since 2007 (Casa delle Bestie ferite). In 2018, surveys investigated various areas of the quarter to clarify the planimetric development and the chronolog y of some rooms in these domus, partly brought to light in previous years.One of these, in particular, located near the perimeter wall of the relevant domus, presents a two-colours mosaic oor, laid on a series of layers that obliterate the previous structures and raise the level of the pavement. ese layers also include a stratum of fragmentary plaster, distributed tabularly over part of the surface occupied by the mosaic. e ne quality of the material led the team to excavate the layer, albeit in section and only partially, so as not to jeopardise the stability of the mosaic above; the frescoes were then analysed from a technical and stylistic point of view and contextualised chronologically on both a stylistic and stratigraphic basis.
