The Mediterranean hypersea: mapping troubled waters

Contemporary global processes – with their circulations and flows of (some) people and goods, and barriers to others – prove that the rigid boundaries set up in geographic scholarship are no longer helpful in fully comprehending the forces at work in the Mediterranean region. A further expansion of the ‘in‑betweenness’ of the water can reveal more complex depths of the Mediterranean. Viewed as a hyperobject marked by global migrations and shifting geopolitics, the Mediterranean has countless entangled stories to tell.
