Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging is useful in supporting the clinical diagnosis of early Parkinson’s disease (PD) and helps to separate Parkinson’s disease from essential tremor, atypical parkinsonism (such as multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy), and secondary parkinsonism (drug-induced and vascular). SPECT may also play a role in investigating the monoaminergic nondopaminergic systems possibly opening to future applications for detection of PD before motor symptoms become clinically manifest.

Abstract

Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging is useful in supporting the clinical diagnosis of early Parkinson’s disease (PD) and helps to separate Parkinson’s disease from essential tremor, atypical parkinsonism (such as multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy), and secondary parkinsonism (drug-induced and vascular). SPECT may also play a role in investigating the monoaminergic nondopaminergic systems possibly opening to future applications for detection of PD before motor symptoms become clinically manifest.
