Maestri di musica, musiche e studenti nei libri amicorum dei secoli XVI e XVII conservati a Nürnberg

In the European university studia of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to complete the education, it often happened that the student attended the schools of the music masters or the workshops of the instrument makers present in the university towns. Of these contacts main sources proved to be the libri amicorum, personal notebooks then owned both by the music masters, who collected the dedications of their students, and by the students themselves, who kept the subscriptions of prominent personalities with whom they came into contact during their study journey. This PhD thesis has tried to investigate this object from a musical point of view, focusing on the holdings of the Stadtbibliothek in Nürnberg, one of the richest in the world for this kind of material. Among the subscriptions found, numerous were those of music masters, composers, and musicians who often accompanied the dedication with canons, riddles, and musical excerpts. These findings allowed prosopographical integration and, in some cases, reconstruction of profiles of musicians, chapel masters, composers, or even simple students who had included music in their educational horizon.

Negli studia universitari europei del Cinque e del Seicento, a completamento della formazione, capitava spesso che lo studente frequentasse le scuole dei maestri di musica o le botteghe dei costruttori di strumenti presenti nelle città universitarie. Di questi contatti fonti principali si sono dimostrati i libri amicorum, quaderni personali allora posseduti sia dai maestri di musica, che raccolgono le dediche dei loro allievi, sia dagli stessi studenti, che conservano le sottoscrizioni di personalità di spicco con le quali entrano in contatto durante il loro viaggio di studio. Questo lavoro ha provato indagare questo oggetto da un punto di vista musicale, concentrando l’attenzione sul fondo della Stadtbibliothek di Nürnberg, uno dei più ricchi al mondo per questo tipo di materiale. Tra le sottoscrizioni trovate, numerose sono state quelle di maestri di musica, compositori e musicisti che spesso accompagnano la dedica con canoni, enigmi e brani musicali. Questi ritrovamenti hanno permesso un’integrazione prosopografica e, in alcuni casi una ricostruzione di profili di musicisti, maestri di cappella, compositori o anche di semplici studenti che avevano inserito la musica nel loro orizzonte educativo.
