The Umweltlehre between Uexküll and Husserl|La Umweltlehre tra Uexküll e Husserl

The aim of this article is to outline a possible link between the work of Jacob von Uexküll and that of Edmund Husserl, following the development of the concept of Umwelt employed by both authors. If Umwelt is indeed the core concept of Uexküll’s work, in Husserl’s case we have to look through the manuscripts, where the use of the notion becomes increasingly frequent and specialized. Even taking into account a bridging role likely played by Max Scheler, who was immediately receptive of Uexküll’s theories, the paper will suggest a deeper theoretical proximity with Husserl, at least in terms of the fundamental aspects of a Umwelt-theory. If grounded, this hypothesis would shed a new light on the history of the concept of Umwelt and its development, which tends not to take the father of phenomenology and his contribution into account
