This paper aims to demonstrate that Giovanni Pascoli was inspired by the Shulamite, the female protagonist of the Song of Songs, for the description of Phidyle. The image of the rustic young woman springs therefore from the convergence of biblical and classical literary traditions, which represent a meaningful component of Pascoli’s poetic world.
