REFRAMING AMÉRICA LATINA IN RAÍZES DO BRASIL, A PRECURSOR HANDBOOK FOR INTERCOMPREHENSIONS IN THE LUSOPHONE-HISPANOPHONE AMERICAS

Didactics oriented towards intercomprehension between Romance languages prove that, by encouraging specific translation pragmatics, it is possible to achieve a goal: in a Romance language speaking circle, each learner can speak his/her own language knowing that he/she is being understood by interlocutors, especially on topics of common interest. Inspired by these theories that enhance long-standing concepts, we prioritize the pragmatic approach that encompasses both translation perspectives and cultural perspectives as advocated by Raízes do Brasil (Roots of Brazil) in 1936. This pragmatic approach hinges on Americas’ Luso-Hispano-bilingualism as a cornerstone, aiming to foster mutual understanding of a shared concept of Latin America. Four more editions of Raízes do Brasil will continue, with updated data, to ‘speak Portuguese’ until 1969 with both Lusophones/Hispanophones and a range of other theoretical interlocutors. Including Italophones, who will be recognized based on arguments highlighted since the first edition. Insights are presented to investigate evidence showcasing diverse inferential processes, particularly in two groups of readers: Lusophones/ Hispanophones and those from other backgrounds. All these readers are encouraged to collaborate in the resemantization of the América Latina frame while preventing it from being contaminated by authoritarian ideologies originating from Europe. By continuing to ‘speak’ against dictatorships – in a classical Portuguese that any Americas’ Spanishspeaking or Italian-speaking person could deverbalize directly in the act of reading – the essay’s writing/publishing history will coincide with a sufficiently long period of time for the resemantization of the América Latina frame based on the cultural legacies transmitted by Americas’ Luso-Hispano bilingualism to take hold. That incessant reframing of América Latina will be reflected in the 1988 Constituição that would restore democracy to Brazil while laying the groundwork for MercoSul/ Cad.
