Le élites cittadine della regio X - Venetia et Histria. Il caso di studio di Verona

Through a study of different sources, mainly epigraphic, but also literary, archaeological and iconographic, we reconstruct the identity of civic magistrates of the city of Verona in Roman times, and their belonging to specific gentes, active in a time between the foundation of the municipium in 49 BC until the age of Gallienus. In order to understand the relationships and the dynamics of power, the times of rise and permanence in power of families are highlighted. Not only magistrates are therefore taken into consideration, but also persons belonging to the so-called "middle classes", such as pseudo-magistrates, as seviri and seviri augustales. To reconstruct the bonds that occurred between the different levels of the local elites, it is also useful to study all the members of equestrian and senatorial rank from Verona, or attested in the territory, and therefore capable of influencing public life. The impact of both the individuals, and their families, on Verona is therefore analyzed, also through the testimonies of evergetic acts. From a methodological point of view, particular attention is paid to the iconographic aspects and to the typology of the monuments; it has thus been possible to identify some trends in the use by the middle classes of certain types of monument,; the representations of fasces, lictores and sillae curules also make it possible to identify new seviri, while thanks to the iconographic aspect some monuments are attributed to other members of the local élite.

Attraverso uno studio delle fonti, principalmente epigrafiche, ma anche letterarie, archeologiche e iconografiche, si cercano di ricostruire l’identità e l’appartenenza a determinate gentes dei magistrati cittadini della città di Verona in età romana, in un periodo compreso tra la fondazione del municipium nel 49 a.C. sino all’età di Gallieno. Al fine di comprendere le parentele e le dinamiche del potere, si evidenziano i tempi di ascesa e di permanenza al potere delle famiglie. Vengono quindi presi in considerazione tutti i magistrati, ma anche i personaggi appartenenti ai cosiddetti “ceti medi”, quali pseudo-magistrati quali seviri e seviri augustali. Per ricostruire le trame intercorse tra i diversi gradi delle élites locali risulta inoltre proficuo studiare tutti i personaggi di rango equestre e senatorio provenienti da Verona o attestati nel territorio, in grado quindi di influire sulla vita cittadina. Si valuta quindi l’impatto sia individuale, sia della famiglia d’appartenenza, su Verona anche attraverso le testimonianze di atti evergetici. Dal punto di vista metodologico, particolare attenzione è stata posta agli aspetti iconografici e alla tipologia dei monumenti; si sono così potute identificare alcune tendenze all’utilizzo da parte di ceti medi di alcuni tipi di monumento; le raffigurazioni di fasci, littori e selle curuli consentono inoltre di identificare nuovi seviri, mentre grazie all’aspetto iconografico si attribuiscono alcuni monumenti a membri delle élites locali.
