This essay analyses the presence and modes of representation of the cathedral, and more generally of spaces of the sacred, in the television series The Young Pope (Sorrentino, 2016): The role played by St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, which opens and closes the series; the functionalization of St. Peter’s and its square, often desolate and empty, as the rigid and haughty sacredness preached by Pope Belardo before his final softening; the gardens of the Apostolic Palace or even "ordinary" places that become the setting for the epiphany of a more human, unexpected and authentic sacredness.

Abstract

This essay analyses the presence and modes of representation of the cathedral, and more generally of spaces of the sacred, in the television series The Young Pope (Sorrentino, 2016): The role played by St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, which opens and closes the series; the functionalization of St. Peter’s and its square, often desolate and empty, as the rigid and haughty sacredness preached by Pope Belardo before his final softening; the gardens of the Apostolic Palace or even "ordinary" places that become the setting for the epiphany of a more human, unexpected and authentic sacredness.
