The motif of the ride with the dead man (ATU 365; E215), called ‘Lenore’ after Bürger’s famous ballad, recurs in both literature and folklore. This paper examines its presence in Romanian oral traditions, where it is attested both in the verse genre of the ballad (cântec bătrânesc) and in the prose genre of the folktale (basm). The analysis of the ballad of ‘Voica’, highly representative of the type, reveals the peculiarities of the Romanian documentation and its mythical-ritual implications.

Abstract

The motif of the ride with the dead man (ATU 365; E215), called ‘Lenore’ after Bürger’s famous ballad, recurs in both literature and folklore. This paper examines its presence in Romanian oral traditions, where it is attested both in the verse genre of the ballad (cântec bătrânesc) and in the prose genre of the folktale (basm). The analysis of the ballad of ‘Voica’, highly representative of the type, reveals the peculiarities of the Romanian documentation and its mythical-ritual implications.
