This essay inquires into the possibility of adding, among the causes of the decline and fall of the 'Res publica' romana, a reason drawn from politics, related to the disputes over the distribution of political revenues from 133 BC onwards and in the years immediately following. Reviewing the studies and the ideas carried out by Gianfranco Miglio, the leading scholar on this subject, we find out that both the events relating to the inheritance of Attalus III, king of Pergamum, and some of the measures taken by Caius Gracchus are evidence of the plausibility of this explanatory reinterpretation.

Abstract

This essay inquires into the possibility of adding, among the causes of the decline and fall of the 'Res publica' romana, a reason drawn from politics, related to the disputes over the distribution of political revenues from 133 BC onwards and in the years immediately following. Reviewing the studies and the ideas carried out by Gianfranco Miglio, the leading scholar on this subject, we find out that both the events relating to the inheritance of Attalus III, king of Pergamum, and some of the measures taken by Caius Gracchus are evidence of the plausibility of this explanatory reinterpretation.
