Deliberative experiments are ad-hoc settings designed to create proper contexts for citizen deliberation. They are typically composed of randomly selected citizens with the task of reflecting upon a problem and develop propositions usually addressed at decision-makers and/or the public at large. Whereas deliberative experiments have long been understood as the main way to promote deliberative democracy, there is growing recognition of the many ways in which social movements affect the prospect of deliberative democracy. These include the interaction between social movements and deliberative experiments whose synergies and tensions are now starting to receive due attention.

Abstract

Deliberative experiments are ad-hoc settings designed to create proper contexts for citizen deliberation. They are typically composed of randomly selected citizens with the task of reflecting upon a problem and develop propositions usually addressed at decision-makers and/or the public at large. Whereas deliberative experiments have long been understood as the main way to promote deliberative democracy, there is growing recognition of the many ways in which social movements affect the prospect of deliberative democracy. These include the interaction between social movements and deliberative experiments whose synergies and tensions are now starting to receive due attention.
