Artisan de l’ironie et du sarcasme, Gary joue avec ses origines dans ses récits autobiographiques. En fuite d’un passé douloureux, l’écrivain ne cherche pas à reconstruire les traces de sa filiation à partir des détails fiables, mais à les dissimuler, pour mieux les découvrir, au sens même de les réinventer. Cette mécanisme déceptif est encore plus évident pour ce qui concerne les références sombres à l’antisémitisme subi pendant l’enfance. Bien que l’élément juif, ressorti des cendres de l’Histoire, soit connoté d’un certain malheur, il bénéficie aussi d’une forme d’ajustement compensatoire dans et par le romanesque. Une fois de plus, il ne s’agit pas pour Gary de renier son appartenance au judaïsme, qui coïncide d’une certaine façon avec sa venue au monde, mais de revendiquer, au moins dans la fiction, la liberté de ne s’approprier aucune identité. Once again, it is not a question for Gary of denying his belonging to Judaism, which coincides in a certain way with his coming into the world. On the contrary, he claims, at least in fiction, the freedom not to appropriate any identity.
