The article focuses on the Archiconfrérie des Mères Chrétiennes, a strongly conservative women’s catholic organization founded in France in 1850. Led by Louise Josson and Father Théodore Ratisbonne, in a few years’ time it spread all across Europe, working side by side with the congregation of Notre-Dame de Sion to convert two specific groups: the Jews and the male members of the family (fathers, husbands and sons) who had lost faith. The goal changed drastically the ideal image of catholic women, turning them into « virile » and radical activists; in this way, the organization tried to reshape gender relations inside the catholic nation, without questioning the traditional model of masculinity.
