The international debate on religious teaching must consider the challenges of a multicultural society. We find the Italian case particularly interesting, both owing to the existence of a Catholic confessional religious teaching, which has evolved over time, and the resumption of the academic pedagogical debate on this subject. Evidence of this resumption is a monographic dossier, which an important Italian pedagogical magazine has dedicated to religious teaching in a multicultural context. It is thus possible to take stock of the Italian pedagogical debate with regard to religious teaching and outline some prospects of development that also take into account the most recent developments in the theology of religions. The text concludes with a pedagogical proposal that respecting the identity of a teaching standardized by a Concordat outlines possible scenarios for its evolution in the context of interreligious dialogue.
