The COVID-19 pandemic had put pressure on the healthcare systems. During the first months of 2020, resilience became a common word. The literature on resilience focuses mainly on private companies, however, the healthcare sector needs further research to investigate how to develop resilience. In light of the consequences of the pandemic during the first wave of COVID-19, this research aims at analysing what are the capabilities and how to develop them in the healthcare setting during a pandemic event. The research deepened the peculiarities of supply chain resilience to investigate the management of COVID-19 patient flows during the first wave of the pandemic. Because of the scarcity of empirical studies related to the patient flows during a pandemic event in the supply chain resilience literature and due to the currency of the investigated phenomenon, the thesis, by adopting the dynamic capability theory as a theoretical lens, investigates the dynamic capabilities needed for developing resilience. Moreover, the research identifies how resilience should be developed to manage patient flows during a pandemic. The empirical analysis adopted a qualitative methodology based on multiple case studies. The data provided by nine healthcare organisations have been gathered by semi-structured interviews, field observations and documents. The research contributes to shedding light on the conceptual clarity of the resilience development process by adopting the dynamic capability theory as a theoretical lens and identifying the dynamic capabilities, activities and practices to develop resilience. Furthermore, the research highlights for each activity the level of maturity of the identified resilience practices, thus providing a tool for managerial practice to develop resilience in healthcare organisations. Finally, the research reveals 12 theoretical propositions concerning how the development of the identified dynamic capabilities has been favoured.

Abstract
Finally, the research reveals 12 theoretical propositions concerning how the development of the identified dynamic capabilities has been favoured.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
