Abstract

Over the past six decades, most sub-Saharan cities have undergone major urbanization and urban planning changes. In the context of urban planning, the post colonial critique is then a reasoned critique of the Eurocentrism of urban planning practices in sub-Saharan Africa. Postcolonial urban planning seeks to debunk preconceptions about the immaturity of endogenous sub-Saharan knowledge in urban planning. The existence of cities in sub-Saharan Africa is a very old phenomenon. Contrary to the collective imagination, pre-colonial Africa had several urban structures of varying levels of development. Colonialism in sub-Saharan African countries has been characterized by the unilateral introduction of Western urban planning practices in the occupied territories. Sub-Saharan African states have so far had urban development models that have been based on colonial, de-colonial and neo-colonial urban planning.
