The present article is devoted to the unpublished screenplay Petersburg, which Andrei Belyi adapted from his homonymous masterpiece and wrote in 1918. The screenplay was commissioned by the Moscow Kinokomitet and is now preserved in the D. Bogomilskii Collection of the Moscow Russian State Library. In many ways, the genesis of Belyi’s work is still unclear and is here reconstructed. The structure of the work is also reconstructed: the screenplay is divided into five parts which comprise several ‘scenes’ (kartiny). The article goes on to examine its fundamental elements, including the drawings with which Belyi provides simple but effective instructions to the director, and also analyses the main functions and characteristics of its captions. A brief description of the screenplay’s most distinctive stylistic features is also included.
